Moving While Blind: How Good Communication Made It Stress Free (by Vika Trussell)

Recently, I moved into a new place — and as someone who is blind, moving can seem like it might be an overwhelming experience. But thanks to the support of amazing friends and some good communication strategies, the whole process was smooth and not stressful at all.

When I told people I was moving, they immediately offered to help. Some even brought boxes! I made the decisions about what went into each box, and they helped with the hands-on tasks like wrapping up my plates and cups carefully to protect them. As each box was packed, they labeled it with my name and listed what was inside. Even though I couldn’t see the labels myself, this made it much easier for the movers to know which room each box should go into.

Once everything was at the new place, people helped by unpacking the boxes and moving things into different rooms — even if they weren’t fully put away yet. The goal was to get all of the boxes out of the way and make the space easier for me to navigate.

The reason everything went so well was because I knew exactly how to explain what I needed, and everyone listened. They didn’t assume what would be best for me — they asked and followed my lead. It made all the difference and turned what could have been a stressful move into a really positive experience.
